Construction on new Exhibition Park expansion to start Monday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The construction of the new Agri-food Hub and Trade Centre at Exhibition Park is set to begin March 8.

On Monday, the process will begin with the removal of trees from the Lethbridge & District Exhibition grounds.

The Exhibition said this part of construction is “unfortunate but necessary” and the majority of the trees are beyond the expected life span of their genus.

Many of the trees are below the elevation for the new building and will not survive fill being added around them.

Exhibition noted that even though the trees will be removed, they won’t be going waste. The trees will be harvested and re-used in the building furniture plan or donated in the community.

Each of the trees removed will be planted at a 1:1 ration in the future landscaping plan, abiding by current City of Lethbridge planting guidelines.

Exhibition stated that the cuttings will be removed from the old growth trees, cultivated and re-planted on site in the future landscaping plan.

BIRDS OF PREY

In Exhibition’s environmental report, no birds of prey habitat were identified in the construction area.

However, if some are found, birds will be relocated by protocol to the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation in Coaldale.
