LETHBRIDGE – The Early Childhood Education program at Lethbridge College received $25-thousand to participate in a childhood development study.

The Lawson Foundation invests into ideas and organizations for the well-being of children and youth. It announced a $195-thousand grant earlier this month for its “Outdoor Play Strategy”.

Lead from Okanagan College by Dr. Beverlie Dietze, the project includes several other institutions. It looks at how playing outdoors can affect all aspects of early childhood development.

The college will take part in the research, which will also go towards developing a new program curriculum. Instructors Joanne Keilty and Cheryl Hatten will present research findings at a national conference.

Specifically, the grant money will be used for a training model to teach childhood educators about the high priority that should be placed on outdoor exercise.

This project will also certify faculty to assess and make recommendations on how to design future outdoor play spaces.
