LETHBRIDGE: It will come as no surprise that the jobless rate is up locally, provincially and nationally.

In the Lethbridge – Medicine Hat region, the rate jumped more than half a point to 6.6% last month. That’s up more than 1.5% from February of last year.

Alberta’s jobless rate is now at it’s highest in more than 20-years — climbing to 7.9% last month – a half point above the rate in January. Job losses have predominantly been within the mining, oil and gas sectors and related industries. Alberta’s jobless rate in February of 2015 sat at 5.4%.

While Alberta once had the lowest unemployment rate in the country, the province is now in the middle of the pack. The rate is higher than BC (6.6%), Saskatchewan (5.9%), Manitoba (6%), Ontario (6.8%) and Quebec (7.6%).
