LETHBRIDGE – The Galt Museum and Alberta Health Services South Zone celebrated a milestone in collaborative therapy.

The 40th session of Expressive Arts took place on Wednesday providing participants a chance to create horseshoe art and learn about ranching history in Southern Alberta.

Heidi Davis, a recreation therapist with AHS, said the idea is to provide a way for seniors and people with special needs to get involved with art.

“If people need assistance, maybe moving or getting supplies, completing a project, we can provide that,” Davis said.

Janae Redgrave, Community Program Coordinator for the Galt Museum, said the Galt`s goal is to combine creativity with history.

“It`s a hands on history program, so what we do is we have a project each week and we talk about some related history,” Redgrave said. “Today we`ll be talking about horseshoes and farriers as well as cowboys and ranchers in Southern Alberta.”

To get the participants inspired, Frosty the horse and his rider were brought in from the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association to ride in the field next to the Galt atrium. (Video of the demonstration below)

Helena Vedres, a participant in the program who experiences joint pain, said the experience has wonderful for her.

“It`s just totally amazing, I love it,” she said. “You`re able to express yourself and show your talents and have fun.”

The Galt will exhibit select pieces of art created during the events later on in the fall.
