Japanese Garden prepares for early opening, later hours

May 5, 2016 | 1:41 PM

LETHBRIDGE – The Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens will be opening a week earlier than usual.

The garden usually opens Mother’s Day weekend, but moved up the date thanks to favourable weather conditions.

Michelle Day, Executive Director of the garden, says they have a special treat for those who can’t wait till the weekend.

“We’re doing a sneak peek of the garden tonight and tomorrow night from 5 to 9 pm and then the garden officially opens on Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm,” she said.

They are extending their hours this year to let people have more time to explore the gardens.

“Last year we were open 9 am to 5 pm,” Day said. “This year we’re open from 9 am to 6 pm with last entry to the garden at 5:30.”

Exhibits for opening day include Japanese storytelling, a collection of authentic Japanese tea cups, tours of the garden and a Taiko Drumming performance.

Admission prices have not changed from last year. You can find more at nikkayuko.com.
