Lethbridge Man Sentenced for South Side Stabbing

LETHBRIDGE – A 40-year old Lethbridge man who stabbed another individual during a fight in December, has been given a six month Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) and one year of probation.

On December 29, 2015, around 11:45-pm, Shawn Levi Lawson went into a convenience store along 6 Avenue South covered in blood and saying someone was trying to kill him. Lawson had suffered a few superficial cuts to his hands.

Going over surveillance video, police found that Lawson and the 32-year old victim met just a short time before the incident, and had been smoking and drinking together just outside the store.

An argument then led to the victim pulling a knife and the two getting into a fight. After wrestling the knife free and getting the victim on the ground, Lawson continued the attack, stabbing the victim several times.

Police found the victim outside in an alley and he was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries, however the Crown noted that he was treated and released within a few days.

Lawson was cooperative with police, admitting what he had done and apologizing for his actions. He told police that he couldn’t remember much as he was heavily intoxicated at the time. His lawyer explained that Lawson has been seeking help for substance abuse issues, with Lawson telling the court he has been sober since the incident.

After hearing that Lawson is the primary caregiver to three children, the judge agreed with a joint submission from the Crown and defence on a sentence. During the six month CSO, Lawson will be bound by a curfew, he must abstain from the use of alcohol and drugs, and he is to take counselling recommended by his probation officer.
