LETHBRIDGE – The city broke ground on Phase 2 of the Crossings Leisure Complex in west Lethbridge Friday morning.

The facility, which will be nearly double the size of Phase 1, will feature an aquatics centre, multi-sport field house, fitness centre, indoor track, gymnasiums, child care area, indoor playground, locker rooms and commercial space.

The aquatic centre alone will be a major attraction with waterslides, a lazy river, lap pool, surf simulator and a whirlpool.

Jarle Lovlin, Principal Architect with Diamond Schmitt Architects, noted that they are striving towards providing an open layout.

“Transparency is really important in these facilities so that you can see from activity to activity,” explained Lovlin. “It kind of engages people and allows people to be inspired to do something that they might not normally be interested in doing.”

The $109.55-million facility is scheduled for completion in 2019 and will be connected to Phase 1, which features twin ice arenas and 10 curling sheets.
