Woman Accused in Mother’s Death Released on Bail

Jun 13, 2016 | 2:21 PM

LETHBRIDGE – A woman accused in the death of her mother in Lethbridge earlier this year, has been released on bail.

Lisa Freihaut was charged with second degree murder on April 22, in connection with the death of her 78-year old mother, Irene Carter.

As part of her release conditions, Freihaut will have to provide no less than $100,000 in property and must turn over her passport or other travel documents. She will also be under 24-hour house arrest – with exceptions for work, education or medical emergencies – and will be given one hour a day to attend a gym.

On January 17, 2016, Freihaut and her husband called police, saying they found Carter’s body in her home along the 300 block of Normandy Road South while going to check-up on her.

An autopsy confirmed she died from multiple stab wounds, and police believe she was killed on January 13.

Police explained that through their investigation, they believe the two were involved in a dispute over finances, and that a physical altercation resulted in Carter’s death. They also noted that there is currently no evidence implicating Freihaut’s husband.

She will return to court July 25.
