Open Houses to Paint a Picture of Energy Efficiency in Alberta

Jul 26, 2016 | 2:17 PM

LETHBRIDGE – The Government of Alberta will be re-investing roughly $645-million from its carbon levy, and it’s your turn to have a say in where that money should go.

An advisory panel will be in Lethbridge on Wednesday, July 27 to begin public discussions, working toward the launch of Energy Efficiency Alberta programs. It’s the newest provincial agency that will promote and support energy efficiency and community energy systems.

The panel will be travelling across the province holding open houses with the public, Indigenous communities, non-profits and municipal and technical stakeholders. The purpose is to gain a better understanding of needs and opportunities in Alberta.

“Alberta is the only place in North America without an energy efficiency strategy or program. That’s a shocking fact that we are fixing,” noted Shannon Phillips, Minister of Environment and Parks. “We want to make sure that [the money] is going toward families, and communities, and small businesses where it will have the most bang for our buck.”

After all the feedback is collected by September, Minister Phillips will be presented with a report with the panel’s advice included. It’s anticipated that Energy Efficiency Alberta will officially launch in early 2017.

Phillips added that Albertans have already demonstrated that they’re ready to do the right thing, and this will only help them become leaders in climate change.

Lethbridge’s open house will be open from 5-pm to 8-pm on the 27th, at the new Multicultural Centre along 6 Avenue South. More will be held in different communities throughout this coming fall.
