Alberta Open Farm Days to Give Behind the Scenes Look at Ag Industry

Aug 16, 2016 | 12:56 PM

LETHBRIDGE – This weekend you have a chance to get an up-close look at the agriculture industry at no cost.

A number of local farmers are opening up their operations for Alberta Open Farm Days on Saturday and Sunday (Aug 20, 21).

Farming Smarter – in conjunction with the Canola Council of Canada – is joining the initiative this year by holding an open house at their research farm just east of Lethbridge on Sunday (Aug 21).

Their farm acts as a bridge between scientists and farmers, by testing things like new varieties of seed and seed treatments.

“There’s more and more of this social accountability or social licence as we’re calling it in our industry,” stated Farming Smarter Assistant Manager, Jamie Puchinger. “More and more people want to know about how their food’s being produced, and that it’s being done in a sustainable manner.”

As part of the open house, there will be a wagon ride through crops that you can register for, which will include a look at their industrial hemp plots.

A photo scavenger hunt will also be part of the tour – with prizes available – along with some hands on elements.

“They’ll get to get their hands dirty talking about soil, they’ll get to learn about bees and see an observation hive, and they’ll also get to look and crawl into some farm equipment,” explained Puchinger.
