Man Accused of Killing Baby Released on Bail

Aug 31, 2016 | 10:59 AM

LETHBRIDGE – A 40-year old Lethbridge man accused in the death of a nine month old baby boy, has been granted bail.

Tyler Brian Hogan was released on a recognizance of $50,000 cash or $100,000 surety Wednesday morning (Aug. 31), after appearing in person in Court of Queen’s Bench.

Hogan faces a charge of second degree murder, in connection with the April death of Austin Wright.

On April 28, 2016, Lethbridge EMS responded to a report of a baby in medical distress at a residence along the 600 block of 17 Street North. Upon arrival paramedics located Austin inside the home, not breathing and in cardiac arrest. He was transported to the Chinook Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation determined that Austin had been left in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, who was living in the residence at the time. The man initially reported to police that Austin had fallen and just stopped breathing, but an autopsy determined the little boy died as a result of blunt force trauma that was not consistent with a fall.

As part of Hogan’s release conditions, he must surrender his Passport and cannot leave Alberta. He cannot be in the presence of children under the age of 16, unless with another adult. He is also bound by a curfew that runs from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. seven days a week, and can’t buy or consume alcohol or intoxicating substances.

Hogan returns to court September 16, at which time a date will be set for a preliminary hearing. It will determine if there’s enough evidence to proceed to trial.
