Famed rodeo announcer and author Dave Poulsen will be the guest speaker as the southern region of 4H Alberta kicks off the organization’s 100th birthday in January.

At a breakfast Tuesday, Sept. 27 the 4H Southen Region laid out its plans for Saturday, Jan. 7. Each 4H club will be showcased at a trade show at Exhibition Park in Lethbridge that will be free to the public during the afternoon.

Poulsen will speak at a banquet that evening. And a time capsule will be unveiled, in the shape of a grain elevator. A limited number of tickets will be available to the public starting Monday, Oct. 3 at Exhibition Park.

Celebration committee chair Andy Pittman explained 4H teaches leadership skills to young people.

“Through the leadership skils we teach them about communication, about community service, about giving back — community service is really about giving back,” he said. “About empowering them to make decisions within their club, and without helping others as well.”

Projects range from livestock to woodworking, interior decorating to health and fitness. But agriculture is still a big part of it.

“I think it’s shown people what agriculture means to society, and I think it’s something that kids growing up in 4H, and parents invovled in 4H have really been able to see, through all of that, and just the way it affects us and the economy,” said Kayley Dueck, a longtime former member who remains involved with the organization.

There are 56 clubs in the Southern Region of 4-H Alberta
