Another win for the Hurricanes — 3-2 over Medicine Hat

Dec 9, 2016 | 9:10 PM

LETHBRIDGE –  Friday night’s match against rival Medicine Hat provided a very physical first period for the Hurricanes, who were out-shot 17-8. The period ended with the Tigers ahead 1-0, courtesy of a goal from David Quenneville who beat Canes Goalie Stuart Skinner on the power-play.

The Hurricanes redeemed themselves in the second frame, as they pulled out 10-shots to the Tigers six. Half way through the period, Jordy Bellerive tied the score, assisted by Shaun Dosanjh and Ryley Lindgren.  Just over a minute later, Brennan Riddle popped in his first WHL career goal, putting his team up 2-1. The period ended on that score.

The third period saw the Tigers up their shooting action, which saw Quenneville plant his second goal of the game at the half way mark and tie the score on a power play.  However, the Canes fought back and five minutes later, Giorgio Estephan planted the game winner, assisted by Tyler Wong and Colton Kroeker.

With four minutes left in regulation, the match went to 4-on-4 after the Canes’ Jadon Joseph and Tiger Chad Butcher were called for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Tigers pulled their goalie with a minute left but the effort didn’t keep the Canes from a 3-2 win.

The game’s three stars were Brennan Riddle (first WHL career goal), the Tigers’ David Quenneville (posted both of his team’s goals) and Cane goalie Stuart Skinner (turned aside 37 shots).

Medicine Hat now has five losses in a row, in spite of out-shooting the Canes 39-23.

The Hurricanes tally points in ten straight games and sit at 16-11-2-2.
