LETHBRIDGE –  The Hurricanes put a halt to a New Year two game losing skid with a 7-4 home win over Edmonton Friday night.

The Canes’ Egor Babenko opened the scoring at 1:45 into the first frame, with the Oil Kings’ Davis Koch taking advantage of a powerplay less than a minute and a half later to tie the game. The one all score was where the first period ended but, not before the Canes Jordy Bellerive and the Oilers Davis Murray each earned a five minute major for fighting.

The 2nd period opened with the Canes on a powerplay, after Edmonton was assessed a delay of game penalty at the end of the first. Brett Davis took advantage of the opportunity, putting the Canes ahead 2-1.

However, the wheels came off the bus minutes later as Edmonton hammered in two more goals in rapid succession.  The action prompted the Canes to change out goalie Ryan Gilchrist, who had allowed four goals on 14 shots.  Unfortunately, less than a minute after goalie Stuart Skinner was brought in, the Oil Kings struck again.

At that point, the Canes appeared to get their second wind, as Jordy Bellerive planted a short-handed goal and Egor Babenko found the back of the net 40 seconds later to tie the game. Two minutes before the end of the period, Tyler Wong had the Canes up 5-4, in spite of the Oilers leading in shots on goal 22-17.

The Oil Kings opened the third period with a goalie change.  It didn’t help as the Canes’ Ryley Lindgren used a powerplay to add to the team’s score assisted by Giorgio Estephan and Tyler Wong. What followed was a flurry of penalties for hooking, tripping and roughing. The final goal came on another powerplay, as Ryan Bowen found the mark on an assist from Egor Banenko and Jordy Bellerive.

The Canes’ win has the team 21-15-3-2 in the standings, as they are back on home ice Saturday night to play Red Deer
