Hurricanes fall 6-5 in overtime to Hitmen

LETHBRIDGE – It was a great weekend for the Lethbridge Hurricanes offence, unfortunately, on the defensive side of the puck it’s one that will likely cause some concerns for the organization.

Playing three games in three days, the Hurricanes let a 5-1 lead slip through their fingers Friday night in a 6-5 shootout loss, then almost let go of another big lead on Saturday in a 6-5 win, before coming from behind in Calgary on Sunday, but once again falling… 6-5.

Things would get off to a positive start for Lethbridge, as Igor Merezhko buried his second goal of the season seven minutes into the game. The success would be short lived though, as Calgary responded just 35 seconds later to even things up.

Hurricanes captain Tyler Wong restored the lead early in the second with his 32nd, however, the Hitmen would go on to score three in a row – including one from former Cane, Brady Reagan – making it 4-2 for the hosts.

The Hurricanes were dominated on the shot clock 35-21, with the worst coming in the second period when they were outshot 15-4 by the Hitmen. Despite that fact, they managed to mount an impressive comeback with goals from Wong, Alec Baer and Calen Addison to tie the score 5-5 and force overtime.

Just 1:44 into extra time, however, the Hitmen’s Matteo Gennaro would complete his hat-trick to win the game.

The good news for Lethbridge is that by making it to OT, they extended their current point-streak to six games (4-0-1-1). Their record now stands at 24-15-4-3.

The Hurricanes have the next few days off, as they prepare to host the Swift Current Broncos Wednesday night (Jan. 18) at the Enmax Centre.
