Organizers thrilled following world curling event

LETHBRIDGE – Discussions have already started for the next big curling event the city might be able to host.

Kirk Mearns, co-chair of the recent World Seniors and Mixed Doubles Curling Championships, said the event went exceptionally well.

“Attendance was way above what we ever thought it would be,” Mearns said. “We put between five and seven hundred people a day through there. The competitors had a great time. (The) World Curling Federation’s just thrilled.”

Mearns said the economic impact was estimated at up to $1.5 million, generating more than 3,500 hotel room nights and filling up the three host hotels.

“We probably put five thousand people through there, with competitors and World Curling Federation people watching the whole thing. The community came out in droves,” he added.

Mearns said the WCF is interested in exploring a future bid by Lethbridge to host the event again, or possibly the world junior championships. A Grand Slam event could also be on the horizon.
