Lethbridge Pride and Transgender crosswalks damaged again

Jun 15, 2017 | 10:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE –  For the second time in three days, the crosswalks that the Lethbridge Pride Society paid out of their own pockets to have painted across 3rd Avenue South and 6th Street South, have been badly vandalized.

This time, it wasn’t skid marks across them, but what appear to be large streaks of tar or asphalt spread out in several areas, creating a sticky, black mess that can not be removed or washed off.

Lethbridge Police says officers are investigating the vandalism incidents now, after a City worker reported this morning that paint and manure had been spread all over the rainbow crosswalk.

Lethbridge’s Pride Society, which paid thousands of dollars to have the two crosswalks painted just over a week ago, had this to say in a Facebook statement:

“Pride members still say this does not reflect Lethbridge as a whole, and invite the community o the Pride flag raising on Monday at 6:30 pm at City Hall.”

City workers on scene this morning (June 15) tell LNN that the crosswalks had to be repainted anyway, because of the previous skid marks created on them, and because a powerful storm one week ago washed some of the paint away.

The exact timeframe for re-painting, according to a City of Lethbridge worker will not likely be disclosed, for fear that they will be defaced again.
