LETHBRIDGE – A pair of local Members of Parliament have been appointed to the Conservative shadow cabinet, by party leader Andrew Scheer.

Lethbridge M.P. Rachael Harder will be the Official Opposition Critic for Status of Women, and Foothills M.P. John Barlow will be the Associate Critic for Agriculture and Agri-Food.

“Our Shadow Ministers are united, energized, and diverse. We are going to arrive in Ottawa in the fall with one clear message to Canadians: That we are ready to form the next Government of Canada,” said Scheer in a statement.

In a media release from Harder, she called it an honour to be a part of Scheer’s team, and discussed the new role she will be moving into.

“There is still much work to do in order to ensure equal opportunity for Canadian women. While it is encouraging to see the independence and confidence of young women in Canada, too many women and girls are still subjected to sexual and physical violence – simply because they are females,” stated Harder. “We can never be complacent when it comes to protecting the rights of women and girls to live free of violence and gender discrimination.”

Sitting in the House of Commons will resume on Sept. 18.
