Hurricanes post lop-sided 7-2 win over the Wheat Kings

Feb 23, 2018 | 8:50 PM

LETHBRIDGE – The first period began with the Canes out shooting the Wheat Kings but it wasn’t until the midway point that the shots paid off.  Brad Morrison took advantage of a power play to rack up his 24th goal of the season, assisted by Calen Addison and Jordy Bellerive.

The home team didn’t relinquish the momentum.  Just two minutes later, there was another power play and another goal. This time, it was off the stick of Dylan Cozens but, again, assisted by Addison and Bellerive. The 2-0 score held up until the end of the period.

The Wheat Kings hit the ice with determination after the intermission and two minutes later managed to get one by Logan Flodell, to make the score 2-1.

Second frame action passed the halfway mark before any movement on the scoreboard.  This time it was courtesy of Logan Barlage, with help from Jadon Joseph and Jake Elmer. The goal put the Canes ahead 3-1, but the score didn’t last long.  Two minutes later, another power play saw Brad Morrison put the Hurricanes up 4-1.

On a roll, and with less than a minute before the buzzer, Jordy Bellerive got in on the action and put one through the pipes, notching his 43 of the season and put the Canes out front 5-1 to end the second.

The third period picked up where the second left off.  Just over a minute in, another goal for the Canes, as the puck slid off the stick of Egor Zudilov putting the team up 6-1.  Calls of interference and slashing left the Hurricanes short handed in some 5 on 3 action.  However, they killed off the penalties and returned to scoring mode.  At the half-way mark, Taylor Ross took a chance, assisted by Logan Barlage and Dylan Cozens, moving their score up a notch, to 7-1.

At the 13-minute mark, the Wheaties took hold of a power play opportunity and added another goal to their ledger.  The game ended with the 7-2 score.

The Canes lead in shots-on-goal 40-31 and picked up all three stars.  Brad Morrison had two goals on the night, Calen Addison picked up three assists and Jordy Bellerive added a goal and two assists.

The win puts the Hurricanes record at 30-25-6 on the season. Their next game is Tuesday, Feb 27, when they host Moose Jaw.
