LETHBRIDGE – The winter that wouldn’t end shattered records in Lethbridge and elsewhere in Alberta Tuesday, April 3.

Environment Canada said Lethbridge reached a low of -24.4 C, the coldest April 3 in 126 years of record keeping. The previous record was -21.7 C, set in 1954.

Claresholm also set a new record with a low temperature of -22.9 C, while Drumheller’s -22.2 C was also a record.

The weather agency blamed an Arctic ridge of high pressure. On Monday, senior climatologist David Phillips said the duration and intensity of the cold spell make it the worst it’s been since 1970.
