LETHBRIDGE, AB – Stats Canada has released its latest population estimates for the country.

As of July 1st, 2019, Canada was home to 37,589,262 people, which is up 531,497 from the last time in 2018.

This means the country had an annual population growth rate of 1.4%, which is the highest among the G7 nations.

The largest factor driving up the numbers is immigration. 313,580 immigrants were admitted in 2018/2019, which is the second-highest level in Canadian history, behind only 2015/2016.

Alberta’s population grew by 1.63% over the last year, which is the fourth-highest percentage growth behind PEI (2.17%), Ontario (1.72%), and Nunavut (1.67%). The numbers in Alberta are said to be lead by inter-provincial migration.

For the first time ever, Canada is home to more than 10,000 “centenarians”, or people who are over 100 years old. The number reached 10,795 this year, which is more than triple of 2001’s figure.

This is also the first time that baby boomers comprised the majority of seniors, representing 51.1% of the total population. Baby boomers are defined as those born between 1946 and 1965.
