MP Harder to Host Consultation On Assisted Suicide

Feb 8, 2016 | 9:02 AM

LETHBRIDGE:Constituents in the federal Lethbridge riding can offer input into legislation being created for Physician Assisted Suicide this week.

Conservative Rachel Harder will host “A Conversation with the Member of Parliament” from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Thursday night at the Lethbridge Public Library Crossings Branch.

Harder says consultation is essential and Canada must proceed with caution when dealing with this issue.

“When Quebec put legislation in place with regards to physician assisted dying, it took them over six years to listen to the public, consult with witnesses and make sure they put legislation in place that they felt represented the public.”

In 2015 Canada’s Supreme Court ruled a complete ban on assisted dying was unconstitutional and the Federal Government must create new laws by June.

Proponents for the controversial practice want legislation in place as soon as possible but the Liberals have asked for an extension.

“I certainly expect a crowd that’s very interested in this topic and I think we’ll [see] people on both sides of the coin with regards to these issue,” Harder said ahead of the community consultation.

“So I’m very interested to hear the various viewpoints that are represented in the constituency of Lethbridge.”
