Lethbridge Hurricanes Halt 5-Game Losing Skid with 8-4 Win over Edmonton

LETHBRIDGE:   In spite of being out-shot 35-29 by Edmonton, the Hurricanes racked-up eight goals to the Oil Kings tally of four at the Enmax Saturday night.

Although Edmonton opened the scoring, half of the Canes goals were up on the scoreboard during the first 20 minutes, providing the home team with a 4-1 advantage.  Cory Millette and Tyler Wong slapped the first two Canes’ goals through the pipes within 30 seconds of each other.  Ryley Lindgren and Jordy Bellerive followed up with one goal each before the end of the first.

Edmonton’s Brandon Baddock opened scoring in the second period on a power play, after Jordy Bellerive was penalized for four minutes on a high-sticking double-minor. His teammates, Brayden Burke an Andrew Nielsen each added their own power play goals later in the period.

The Canes began the 3rd period with the man advantage, as the Oil Kings Brandon Baddock was benched for unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the 2nd.  Jordy Bellerive took advantage of a power play at 13:01 to tally his second goal of the game for Lethbridge, assisted by Drayton Thunder Chief and Kord Pankewicz.

Brady Reagan had the Canes 8th goal at 15:39 of the third, just before Hurricane Igor Merezhko and Oil King Branden Klatt were each handed five minute majors for fighting.

All three stars of the game went to the Hurricanes – 1) Ryley Lindgren – (1 goal, 2 assists), 2) Tyler Wong – (1 goal, 2 assists), and 3) Drayton Thunder Chief – (1 assist, WHL debut)

The win improves the Hurricanes’ record to 41-20-1-1 and moves the team into a tie with the Brandon Wheat Kings for first overall in the in the Eastern Conference but, the Canes get the tiebreaker with more victories.

The Hurricanes head out on a four game eastern road trip, with their first game on Wednesday, March 2nd against the Warriors in Moose Jaw.
