Furnace replacement scam making the rounds

Dec 14, 2016 | 3:39 PM

LETHRBIDGE –   The City of Lethbridge is cautioning residents about a potential scam involving furnance replacement.

Residents have reported individuals going door to door asking to check homeowners’ furnaces and telling them their furnaces must be replaced if they are past a certain age.

These individuals claim they represent the City of Lethbridge.  However, that is not the case.

City staff will only conduct a furnace inspection at the request of a homeowner or licensed installer and only after a furnace installation permit has been obtained from the City.

Residents who are concerned that door-to-door salespeople may be misrepresenting themselves should contact the Lethbridge Police Service complaints line at 403-328-4444.

For more information on potential scams and what to do if you encounter one, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.

For anyone contemplating updating their furnace, important information on permits, installations and inspections is available on the City of Lethbridge website.
