Dates set for emergency alert test

Apr 30, 2018 | 10:22 AM

OTTAWA – The date has been set for a test of the new public alert system that will send emergency notifications right to your cell phone.

Everyone in Alberta on an LTE network will get a test notification at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday, May 9. The dates and times are somewhat staggered for the different provinces and territories. Radio and TV stations will also broadcast the test message.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said the message will make it clear it’s only a test, and no action is required. The purpose of the test is to familiarize Canadians with the form of the message, including the tone and vibration.

The system officially became active April 6. The test is timed to coincide with Emergency Preparedness Week. People can check if their phone is compatible, and hear a sample of the tone, on the Alert Ready website.
