LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Hurricanes have used their first-round selection in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft on a local product.

Zack Stringer, a 15-year-old forward, spent the season as an underage player with the Midget AAA Hurricanes. Stringer had 17 goals and 13 assists in 23 games during the regular season, adding 16 points in 10 postseason games, and 10 more points to help Lethbridge win bronze at the Telus Cup.

“Zack went to the Telus Cup and put up great numbers; he did just about what Sidney Crosby did at the Telus Cup as he is in an elite group that went to the Telus Cup as a 14-year-old hockey player,” Hurricanes head scout Rob MacLachlan said in a news release.

Stringer was selected by Lethbridge eighth overall. The Hurricanes also drafted:

  • Joe Arntsen (D), Swift Current, Swift Current Broncos Bantam AA
  • Jaden Uy (RW), Richmond, B.C., Seafair Islanders Bantam A1
  • Fischer O’Brien (LW), Prince George, Prince George Cougars Bantam T1
  • Jared Picklyk (G), Kelowna, Okanagan H.A. Bantam Prep
  • Bosten Lajeunesse (D), Red Deer, Red Deer Rebels Bantam AAA

  • Ty Nash (F), Scottsdale, Ariz., Arizona Bobcats 14U

Several members of the Lethbridge Golden Hawks Bantam AAA team were selected during the draft as well. Carson Haynes of Taber was chosen 58th overall by the Tri-City Americans. Brody Tallman of Lethbridge was selected by the Portland Winter Hawks, 173rd overall. Cole Larocque of Lethbridge was selected by Tri-Cities with the 212th pick.
