MD of Taber calls in reinforcements to evacuate campground due to flooding

May 20, 2018 | 6:41 PM

TABER — The Local State of Emergency instituted by the MD of Taber on March 23 in response to unprecedented overland flooding was rescinded on May 11 but some may be wondering if that was a little premature.

Just before noon On Sunday (May 20), two stations from the MD of Taber Regional Fire Service were called out to evacuate the Grassy Lake Forks Campground due to increasing water levels. The water threatened to overwhelm the access road onto the island and strand an estimated 250 people in the recreation area.

Station 2 Rescue and Wildland units helped extinguish all campfires and remained to assist with evacuation, while Station 4 was on scene to assist if a water rescue was required.

The fire service was assisted by the RCMP, the local Ag Service Board and the District’s Public Works department.
