TABER – A 62-year-old Barnwell man is facing significant fraud and theft charges, following a two-year investigation by the Taber Police Service.

In a media release posted on social media by the police force, they say Alberta Transportation brought the concerns to light regarding Darrell Turner, a former long-serving, senior employee.

They allege that during Turner’s employment, government assets were sold to unsuspecting clients, with the proceeds going directly to the accused.

As part of their investigation, police say it appears $70,000 worth of Gravelock (soil stabilizer and dust suppressant) and $110,000 in gravel was sold to third parties, with payments going directly to the individual. They further allege that the individual received money from a highway maintenance sub-contractor over a six-year span to ensure they were awarded a contract. In addition, they say the accused caused numerous road signs to be purchased and then gave them – free of charge – to an acquaintance outside of Alberta Transportation’s jurisdiction.

Turner has been charged with theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, and corruptly obtaining a financial advantage.

Following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Turner has been released from custody with a number of conditions. He’s set to appear in Taber court Aug. 7.
