Lethbridge plummets in annual ranking after methodology change

LETHBRIDGE – While the authors caution against a year-to-year comparison, it’s hard not to notice Lethbridge’s significant drop in a national ranking.

MoneySense places Lethbridge 209th out of 415 places to live. The magazine gave points to the cities, organized as census subdivisions using Statistics Canada data, based on ten categories: economy, affordability, health, weather, commute, crime, taxes, demographics, culture, and amenities. But different weights were given to each category, with economy and affordability judged to be most important.

The MoneySense website offers sliders so people can weigh the categories to their own preferences. The article says results can’t be compared to previous years due to “a number of tweaks and adjustments.” In 2016 and 2017 Lethbridge was ranked 89th.

Overall, Lethbridge comes in between Central Saanich, B.C. and Sorel-Tracy, Que. The city’s strengths were identified as amenities, demographics, and arts and community. Lethbridge County fared significantly worse, at 356th.

The top-ranking community was Oakville, Ont. followed by Ottawa and Russell, Ont. The top-ranked Alberta city was Lacombe, which placed 5th overall. Canmore was 7th while Camrose was 11th and Red Deer 12th.

Among the 46 Alberta communities, Lethbridge ranked 33rd and Lethbridge County was 44th.

Looking at individual categories suggests there are some flaws in the data, however. When only “Nice Weather” is considered, Lethbridge County is second overall in Alberta, while the city of Lethbridge is dead last.
