Enrollment up 3.6 per cent in Lethbridge public schools

LETHBRIDGE – Attendance is up at public schools in Lethbridge for 2018-19, though not quite as much as anticipated in the spring.

Christine Lee, associate superintendent of business affairs for Lethbridge School District No. 51, said enrollment across all their schools is 11,550, an increase of 3.6 per cent.

“It’s very close. It’s slightly lower than what we anticipated in the spring by about 50 students. But other than that, it’s pretty close,” she told LethbridgeNewsNOW in an interview.

Most of that growth, especially at the elementary level, is on the west side, she said. For high school students, the fastest growth is at Chinook on the west side, as well as the south-side Lethbridge Collegiate Institute.

Middle school enrollment on the west side is now balanced between G.S. Lakie and the brand-new Senator Joyce Fairbairn Middle School.

With the opening of that school, Lee said the next major project will be the new southeast elementary school announced last March.

“As soon as we get the final approvals from the provincial government, we’ll be able to tender that school and begin construction, hopefully in the spring,” she explained.

Lee said they’re working on future modernizations and potential new schools as well, to keep up with Lethbridge’s growth.
