LETHBRIDGE – Snow is making its way out of southern Alberta, leaving behind messy road conditions.

As of Wednesday morning, Oct. 3, snowfall warnings remained in effect for the Vulcan/Carmangay region as well as southeastern Alberta, including Bow Island, Medicine Hat, and the Cypress Hills. Warnings for Lethbridge and areas to the west had been lifted.

511 Alberta reported snow-covered highways, especially to the west of Lethbridge, including Highways 3 and 2. Snowplow crews were working across the region. The City of Lethbridge reduced the speed limit on Whoop-Up Drive to 60 km/h.

According to Environment Canada, Lethbridge had received approximately 4 cm of snow as of midnight, with more falling since then. Calgary, however, set a snowfall record for a single day in October – up to 40 cm in some parts of the city.

More than 250 collisions were reported to Calgary Police. Extra snowplows were sent to the city, and at one point 80 transit buses stalled or become stuck in the snow.

Drivers were reportedly stranded in their vehicles along Highway 1 west of Calgary between Cochrane and Canmore. A crash on Highway 2 near Carstairs Tuesday night involved between 20 and 30 vehicles.
