LETHBRIDGE —  A serious injury incident in Lethbridge has prompted an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

Lethbridge Police were called to the 300-block of Stafford Drive south on October 3, to deal with a physical altercation between two people.

An officer found two men, one of whom was in breach of bail conditions and was arrested.

A confrontation occurred between the remaining man and the officer that resulted in the man falling backwards and hitting his head on the pavement. EMS took the man to hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.

As the injury occurred during contact with police, the Lethbridge Police Service reported the matter to the Director of Law Enforcement, as required by the Police Act and ASIRT will conduct an independent investigation.

“I have complete confidence in the training, experience and professionalism of our members,” said Chief Rob Davis.  “The Lethbridge Police Service is committed to public transparency and we welcome ASIRT’s independent investigation.”

LPS will not provide any additional details in order to protect the integrity of the ASIRT investigation.
