LETHBRIDGE – The Salvation Army has some catching up to do with its Christmas Kettle campaign, both here in Lethbridge and nationally.

Major Donald Bladen, community ministries officer with the Salvation Army in Lethbridge, said Thursday, Dec. 20 that at last check, they had raised $110,000 of their $150,000 goal.

“I’m expecting that we’re a little behind right now, and I’m hoping to make up some of that ground,” he said. “But I do realize the economy is tough. People are struggling, but nonetheless, people are very generous, so I have hope.”

Kettles will remain at the seven locations in Lethbridge Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and a half day on Monday, which is Christmas Eve, and Bladen hopes the final push will get them at least close to their goal.

He stresses the money raised helps them do their work not just at Christmas, but all year.

“It’s just so vital for us to reach our goals, and we anticipate a lot of ministry ahead in this coming year as people continue to struggle and recover from financial hardships, so yeah, it’s very important for us to try to get there.”

Nationally, the Salvation Army said it had raised $15.7 million as of Thursday, with a goal of $21 million.
