The battle for the Alberta legislature is about to begin

CALGARY — Alberta’s election window is opening, and that has Premier Rachel Notley and rival Jason Kenney honing their attack lines.

By law, the election must be held some time in March, April or May.

That means Notley can drop the writ starting as early as tomorrow in order to have voters go to the polls on March 1st.

That’s not expected to happen.

All parties are still signing up candidates and Notley has called for a Throne Speech for March 18th.

Nevertheless Notley was in campaign mode at a rally in Calgary.

She says the election is the starkest choice Albertans face in decades.

She says a United Conservative government would see perks delivered to wealthy insiders while families would feel the impact of budget cuts in areas like health and education.

Kenney says Alberta cannot withstand four more years of N-D-P spending, tax hikes, and regulatory red tape.

He says multibillion-dollar deficits and ballooning debt are unsustainable and punish not only this generation but the next.
