Second period rally leads to win for the Hurricanes

CRANKBROOK, B.C. – The Kootenay Ice dominated the first, but a second period run and strong final frame lead to a W for the Lethbridge Hurricanes Monday afternoon.

At the Western Financial Place in Cranbrook, B.C., the Hurricanes’ Dylan Cozens controlled the first face off to start the Family Day game.

At the 7:02 mark of the first, Peyton Krebs of the Ice was called for hooking, the first penalty of the game. The Hurricanes’ Nick Henry was called for tripping shortly after, at the 11:34 mark.

Shortly before the first period came to a close, the home team Ice got on the board, with a goal from Jaeger White at the 17:28 mark, putting Kootenay up 1-0 as the first buzzer sounded in the arena.

Right as the second frame began, Lethbridge goaltender Bryan Thomson was switched out for Carl Tetachuk. Just over two minutes into the period, Kootenay went up 2-0, thanks to a goal from Davis Murray. Brad Ginnell and Chase Hartje dished out the assists.

At the 9:52 mark of the second, the Hurricanes were called for a penalty. This time, Koletrane Wilson was called for roughing at the 9:52 mark. That didn’t deter the visiting team, as at the 11:07 mark, Dylan Cozens scored off an assist from Jake Elmer and Danila Palivko. The Hurricanes were finally on the board!

Just over a minute later, Brad Ginnell was called for slashing. His teammate Martin Bodak was called boarding shortly after. The ‘Canes took advantage of the power play scenario. Jordy Bellerive ripped one past Curtis Meger to tie the game at 2-2. Calen Addison and Nick Henry assisted on the play, which occurred at the 13:01 mark.

Less than a minute later, Jake Elmer scored off an assist from Cozens and Bellerive. The goal put the Hurricanes up 3-2 going into the game’s final period. Before the second wrapped up, Hurricanes’ Taylor Ross was called for cross checking, and Palivko received a penalty for slashing.

55 seconds into the final frame, Lethbridge’s Logan Barlage was called for holding. This was followed by an interference penalty on the Ice’s Martin Bodak at the two-minute mark. Shortly after, Calen Addison was called for tripping, followed by another Hurricanes penalty – this time on Jake Elmer for kneeing. Just before the seven-minute mark, Kootenay’s Connor McClennon received a penalty for tripping. The Hurricanes took advantage, adding another goal to their tally. This time, it was Taylor Ross, off an assist from Calen Addison and Nick Henry.

Kootenay’s Brandon Machado was called for cross checking at the 9:31 mark. As the game was winding down, Nick Henry added to his stellar afternoon and scored to secure the win for the Hurricanes.

Final score was 5-2 for Lethbridge.

Jake Elmer was named the first star of the game. Goalie Carl Tetachuk was named the second star, recording 21 saves off of 22 shots from Kootenay. Ice goaltender Curtis Meger was named the third star for his efforts. He had 43 saves off of 48 shot attempts by the Hurricanes.

Lethbridge is now 30-17-5-5 on the season, and sit in second place of the WHL’s Central Division, behind the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Hurricanes are back at home for the next matchup. They host the Medicine Hat Tigers at the ENMAX Centre on Friday, Feb. 22. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
