Hurricanes offence shines in 6-4 win over Ice

Feb 12, 2017 | 6:28 PM

CRANBROOK – Playing their third game in three days and coming off an ugly loss in Medicine Hat the night before, the Hurricanes bounced back with an impressive performance against the Kootenay Ice Sunday (Feb. 12) night in Cranbrook.

It didn’t start well for the visiting club, as they found themselves down 2-0 eight minutes into the game, with Colton Kroeker scoring both goals for the Ice.

That’s when the Hurricanes offence showed up. Three minutes after going into the hole, deadline addition, Zak Zborosky scored a pair – just 1:27 apart – evening things up and stealing the momentum. Josh Tarzwell pulled the Canes ahead, and while Kootenay would quickly tie it again at 3-3, Egor Babenko would finish off the first period with his 19th of the season.

The second period would see goals from Tyler Wong and Ryan Vandervlis, and one from Kootenay’s Kaedon Taphorn, with neither team finding the back of the net in the third.

What really stood out in the win was an incredible 59 shot output from the Hurricanes, with 25 coming in the second alone.

The win over Kootenay – a team with just 12 wins of their own this season – pulled Lethbridge back to within six points of the division leading Medicine Hat Tigers, and vaulted them a significant 20-points ahead of the third place Red Deer Rebels. It should also be noted that the Hurricanes are now fifth overall in the WHL with 75-points.

They will now get four days off before returning to the ENMAX Centre for a four game home-stand, beginning with the Victoria Royals Friday (Feb. 17) night.
