LETHBRIDGE – A low scoring affair Wednesday night (Mar. 8) at the ENMAX Centre, ended with Hurricanes defenceman Brady Pouteau scoring his first of the campaign, to help his club down the Edmonton Oil Kings 2-1 in overtime.

Fans had to wait until the 18:33 mark of the second period to see a goalie make a mistake, when Hurricanes captain Tyler Wong notched his WHL leading 49th goal of the season, with help from Egor Babenko. The Oil Kings would finally find a way past Lethbridge back-up goaltender Ryan Gilchrist midway through the third to even things up.

That would be all the scoring in regulation, on a night that saw Gilchrist turn aside 28 shots and Edmonton rookie netminder Josh Dechaine stop 25 – 14 of which came in the third period alone.

With just 1:10 left in overtime, Pouteau would break his drought, converting on a feed from Babenko.

The win is the Hurricanes’ seventh straight and part of a dazzling run in 2017. After losing their first two games of the new year, the club has posted an incredible 22-2-1-1, bringing them to second in the Central Division – just two points behind Medicine Hat – and third overall in the Western Hockey League.

Just five games now remain in the regular season for Lethbridge, three of which will be played at home.

Their next action is set for Friday night in Calgary, where they’ll take on the Hitmen, a team that will be desperate as they sit four points out of a playoff spot with six games left to play.
