Canes post 5-4 OT loss to the Broncos in Swift Current

Nov 2, 2018 | 10:18 PM

SWIFT CURRENT —   The Lethbridge Hurricanes took part in a special ceremony ahead of their match against the Broncos in Swift Current Friday night, to honour the victims and survivors of the April 6th Humboldt Broncos bus crash and the 1986 Swift Current Broncos bus crash.

The latter incident happened on December 30th of ’86, as the SC Broncos were on their way to play the Pats in Regina. The bus hit an icy patch at a bend in the road and slid off an overpass, hitting an embankment and flipping on its side in a ditch.  Four players in the rear of the bus were killed – Scott Kruger, Trent Kresse, Chris Mantyka and Brent Ruff, the younger brother of Lindy Ruff. Future NHLers, Joe Sakic and Sheldon Kennedy were also on the bus.

The Canes wore special Broncos Strong jerseys that will be auctioned to raise money for STARS Air ambulance.

Once the game got underway, Cane’s D-man Koletrane Wilson began the action by giving the Broncos a couple of penalty power play opportunities four minutes apart – first for a kneeing incident then for high sticking. However, the game was scoreless until after the mid-way point.

Calen Addison launched his third goal of the season off an assist from Taylor Ross and Wilson, putting the Canes on the scoreboard. Three minutes later, at 14:02, Noah Boyko charts an unassisted goal, giving the Canes a 2-0 lead.

With seconds remaining in the frame, Max Patterson finds the back of the Canes’ net, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The first half of the second period offered up little action beyond a couple of minor penalties.  It wasn’t until 12:42 that Jadon Joseph added his eighth goal of the season, off an assist by Logan Barlage and Calen Addison. Less than a minute later, Andrew Fyten responded with a goal for the Broncos.

Neither net saw any puck action for the remainder of the second period and the buzzer sounded with the Canes leading 3-2 in goals.

The final 20-minutes saw a replay of the second period.  No net action until just after the mid-way point, when Ben King tied the game 3-3 for the Broncos.   The Canes Ty Kolle answered at 17:14, taking advantage of a power play to give his team a 4-3 lead with 2:30 remaining.  At this point, Swift Current pulled their goalie, and with 30-seconds remaining, a flurry of action saw the Broncos tie the game 4-4, sending the players to OT.

The extra frame was short lived. At the three-minute mark, Noah King shot the puck over Reece Klassen’s outstretched glove and it was a 5-4 win for the Broncos.

Both teams tallied eight minutes in minor penalties and the Canes out-shot the Broncos 46-40.

The Canes are 7-5-2-2 in the standings, with their next game on Friday, Nov 9, when they host the Calgary Hitmen at the Enmax.
